Anyway, the caricature started when the some news about Jackie Chan was featured in my Yahoo homepage yesterday. And so I drew him straight from there without much thinking. haha...

We were in the Palace of the Golden Horses from 3 to 7 June 2009 for our Church Camp. Every morning there will be a newspaper hanging on our hotel door. Not much time to read newspapers except when we got back from the talks and while Hsinying takes her shower.

I noticed Malaysian newspapers like to take portrait snap-shots of the person in the news and place it beside the article.

That also means there are there to be caricatured!!! Haha.. It happens that in most hotels, they provide writing pads and a pen. So very conveniently I took their pen and paper and started my doodling activites in between shower waiting time.

I used to look forward to catch every WWF matches when it was shown on TV in Singapore many many many years ago. Had some time today and decided to have some of them caricatured...

Caricatures in pencil is very must less stressful as compared with doing it directly with ink or markers.

To find subjects to draw I thought it would be better to draw someone whom many people are familiar with. At least I (the artist) should be familiar! It is important for a start to find someone easily recognisable because a caricature drawn on a person must satisfy at least two criterion. Firstly, it must resemble that person (i.e. likeness which makes people go, 'Ah... I know him!!!'). Secondly, though resembling that person, both the facial and body expression must be exagerated (i.e. which makes people go, '... that's funny!!!)

Actually there is a third criteria. I placed it separate because this has nothing to do with the caricature artist. It has everything to do with the audience and the recipients of the caricature art work. The recipients and the audience MUST understand the difference between a caricature and a portrait.

How do we know if someone does not understand the difference between a caricature and a portrait? Simple. When you hear, 'Hey! I know my nose is pretty big, but why is it so oversized in the drawing?" or "Why he drew my eyes so tiny?" or "How come it doesn't look like me exactly?" etc... etc... etc.. so on and so forth... and this one "I want my money back for drawing me FUNNY!!!"

Back to the topic. I took images from the magazine (Villegas was from a golf magazine) and from the internet (the rest up there). And then what do I do. Erm... of ya... draw. =)

I have to admit, some looked more a portrait than a caricature... =p

Drawing caricature in a single process from a marker requires some GUTS.
A method used frequently by very confident and experienced caricature artists cause it not only saves (lots & lots & lots of) time, the process of drawing directly from a marker is something people will watch and think to themselves "Wow..."

But here I have some caricatures done by ME direct with MARKERS from images I got from the internet. Shown above is Jennifer Anniston drawn in a single attempt, others like Sylvester Stallone and Morgan Freeman after the second attempt. Mark Lee and Henry Thia were marker'ed after one warm-up sketch in pencils on a seperate piece of A4.
